Church Protection Connection Is Back…For You!

The United Methodist Insurance Program (UMIP) is excited to reignite our new and improved newsletter, now called the Church Protection Connection. Our publication is still dedicated to providing you with information and resources to help protect your church, but many enhancements have been made to make the Church Protection Connection more useful to you and your ministry. We will continue to explore relevant risk management topics to help you obtain better insurance coverage and services, work to prevent losses, and recover when your ministry experiences a loss.

The new newsletter will have fewer articles so we can provide more in-depth content on topics important to you. We have added an “Ask the Expert” section to give you the chance to ask UMIP and its partners questions about all things related to risk management. Finally, the Church Protection Connection has a new name and fresh look as we continue to evolve. Our goal is to provide you with information that you can use to help keep your church operating successfully. We welcome your feedback and suggestions and thank you for your support of the Church Protection Connection. Please encourage others in your church, agency, or ministry to sign up for our publication and follow UMIP on Facebook and Twitter as we also reignite our social media channels.

The New United Methodist Insurance Program (UMIP)

In coordination with the launch of the Church Protection Connection, we would like to share more exciting news with you regarding more positive changes UMIP has undergone. UMIP began in 1976 when the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) was first authorized to make available a “church-wide [property and liability] insurance program.” It transitioned from a purchasing group to a group captive and finally into a pure captive in 2010. In 2018, the board of UMIP determined that the need for capital and continued losses in the property insurance line created a need for a new plan. This plan highlights the importance of churches securing coverage that meets the minimum requirements set forth by GCFA in adherence with The Book of Discipline, among other initiatives.

To address past challenges, UMIP selected AmVenture Insurance Agency to be its insurance broker partner for property and casualty insurance. The partnership enhances UMIP’s ability to provide coverage designed for churches of all sizes, locations, and exposures. It also offers churches outstanding customer service and access to top-tier carriers with experience in the religious sector. AmVenture relies on its experienced leadership team and dedicated staff to administer the new program. This eliminates underwriting risk for the Church going forward as well as the need for additional capital contributions to continue and expand operations.

To support the change in structure for UMIP, the program is being rebranded. A new UMIP website was launched September 1, 2019 that is easier to use and mobile-friendly. New Mission, Vision, and Value statements affirm our commitment to upholding the values of the Church while helping to protect the people, property, and finances of our ministries. We are also committed to providing you with tools, resources, and training to help you create and refine your risk management programs. The new format of the newsletter and website, use of new and existing partners’ industry experience, and resources related to the United Methodist connection will help us accomplish this goal.

The transition to the new program has created much excitement, but it has also presented some unexpected challenges. We apologize for the variety of issues that many churches faced in the early part of 2019 and steps are in place to resolve these issues and further improve the program. We appreciate those who stayed with us and hope that any church that chose to leave UMIP will consider working with us in the future as we overcome the challenges we faced earlier in the year.

We look forward to continuing to serve as a resource for risk management information and providing coverage solutions that help protect the people, properties, and ministries of the United Methodist Church.
