When Waiting Was the Right Insurance Strategy

How UMIP’s patient, ministry-first approach helped one United Methodist church secure stronger protection at renewal

The Challenge: Knowing When to Make a Change
When a United Methodist church first connected with the United Methodist Insurance Program (UMIP) in April 2025, its existing insurance strategy was still competitive.
Rather than urging the church to change carriers simply to gain a new client, UMIP provided an honest assessment: switching insurance providers at that time would not necessarily serve the church’s best interests.
The UMIP team instead positioned itself as a long-term resource and committed to reconnecting when the church’s policy came up for renewal. That approach required patience, but it also began building something essential—trust.
The Turning Point: A Renewal That Changed the Equation
When UMIP followed up at renewal, the insurance market had shifted. The church’s incumbent carrier proposed a 15 percent price increase while also raising deductibles.
What had not been a beneficial move one year earlier had become an opportunity to explore a stronger alternative.
UMIP remarketed the account and worked closely with the church to develop a submission that accurately reflected its risk profile. By gathering the necessary information and presenting the account effectively, UMIP positioned the ministry for consideration by GuideOne, an admitted carrier focused on serving churches and faith-based organizations.
The Solution: Stronger Coverage Where It Mattered
The resulting insurance program did more than move the church to a carrier that was better positioned in the current market. It also strengthened important areas of protection.
UMIP helped the church:
Increase its directors and officers liability limit from $1 million to $5 million.
Reduce its water damage deductible from $50,000 to $25,000.
Improve the overall structure of its insurance program.
Secure coverage through a church-focused carrier that was more competitive in the current market cycle.
These improvements provided the church with broader protection against risks that could significantly affect its finances, leadership and ability to continue its ministry.
The UMIP Difference: Advice Before the Sale
Several qualities made this outcome possible.
UMIP did not pressure the church to make a change before the timing was right. The team monitored developments within the church insurance market, maintained relationships with church-focused carriers and followed up when changing conditions created a genuine opportunity.
Most importantly, UMIP placed the ministry’s long-term interests ahead of making an immediate sale.
That advisory approach reflects the value of working with the denominational insurance program. UMIP understands the risks United Methodist ministries face and can identify opportunities to improve protection, support responsible stewardship and help churches remain focused on their mission.
The Result: Better Positioned for Ministry
Over the course of the relationship, an initial conversation became a stronger insurance program built on trust, timing and an understanding of the church insurance market.
The church gained enhanced coverage, lower exposure to a significant water damage deductible and greater protection for its leaders. It also gained an insurance partner committed to recommending a change only when that change would truly benefit the ministry.
Sometimes the best insurance solution does not begin with a new policy. It begins with honest guidance—and a partner who is still there when the time is right.
